Is LingoSub free?
Yes. Watching videos, the level test, the word-by-word translations and tapping words are free. You only need an account to save words and keep your level on every device.
Which languages can I learn?
French, German, English, Italian, Russian, Latin, Romanian, Norwegian, Spanish, Korean. Translations and word notes are in English.
Where do the videos come from?
They are public YouTube videos from native creators: vlogs, comedy, music, cartoons, news and lessons. They play in the official YouTube player; LingoSub adds the subtitles, translations and word notes around them.
How are the subtitles made?
Every video is transcribed with word-level timing, so each word lights up as it is spoken. Each sentence is then translated, and every word gets its dictionary form, its meaning in that sentence and a short grammar note.
What level do I need?
Any. Beginners get slow, clear videos with a translation above every word. Intermediate learners get native videos with translations only above the words they probably don't know yet.
How is this different from YouTube subtitles?
YouTube shows a whole line at a time and translates it by machine. LingoSub times every word, translates each one in context, explains the grammar, and picks videos that match your level so you understand most of what you hear.
